When Cheynne took her first solo jump she encountered something that shouldn't have existed--didn't in the world she came from.
 
Ka-ran, captain of the guard, captured an out-worlder and took her directly to his king.  To his dismay, he was given the task of discovering the captive--suspected spy's--reason for violating their border.
 
Because he feared he was being tested by his king.  And he was bound to fail when he was so attracted to the outworlder that he had difficulty focusing on the task.
