The wizard king ensorcelled three magical beings and sent them forth to capture the bride of his enemy, to despoil her and then bring her to him so that he could ransom her and return her pieces. Simple plan. What went wrong? Everything. But mostly the despoiling part.
 
When her father arranges a marriage for Princess Eugenia to the king of Lavia, she has a very hard time resigning herself to her fate. The man it thrice her age and has a reputation for cruelty besides. But she is packed up and sent off under guard—for her protection—despite every objection. Her party has barely covered a quarter of the distance from her father’s kingdom to her son-to-be husband’s, when they are set upon by a trio of magical beings sent to capture her by the Wizard King, Konstantin.
 
They have been charged to be certain that they thoroughly despoil the maiden before they return with her so that he can offer to return his enemy’s bride for a price and gloat about her being despoiled afterward—when he returns her in pieces.
 
The problem is they’re enjoying the despoiling part so well they’re reluctant to turn her over to Konstantin.
