This is a work of fiction. All characters, events, and places are of the author's imagination and not to be confused with fact. Any resemblance to living persons or events is merely coincidence.
The two ate their meal quietly and Kane was surprised at how much the petite woman had eaten. When she reached into the breadbasket for her third roll, Kane gave Julia a slight smile. She instantly put it back and realized she had forgotten her manners. The young woman had skipped breakfast that morning and the day had gone by so fast that when the meal came, she was famished.
“Please, eat more if you are still hungry,” Kane insisted.
“Oh I couldn’t, it is really not lady like.”
“No need to worry about being proper with me Miss Morgan,” Kane said honestly.
Julia smiled. “If you promise not to tell Ms. May, then I will have one more.”
It was the first time since they had met that Kane had seen her genuinely smile and the ranger was entranced with her beauty. Even though he found Julia only for her protection, Kane had a sense of guilt for causing such a disturbance in this young woman’s life. He had ripped her from her gentle life in Mississippi and most likely, damaged her perfect reputation. Now he was dragging her Texas, where the land and ways were not quite so sophisticated. Dallas had its social society but it was certainly not as grand as what Julia was probably used to. Kane’s decision to take Julia to Texas had been made so quickly that he did not really think everything through. He was not sure what would happen to Walter’s daughter after she was out of danger. Once Kane found Eli James, the man would pay with his life for killing Walter but after that, Kane wondered about Julia’s future. The ranger was frustrated with himself for not being able to keep his eyes off her. A woman like her certainly does not belong with a man like me, Kane thought to himself.
When they had both finished eating, Kane pushed that cart outside the compartment and then began to take off his boots. Julia noticed him start to unbutton his vest and she instantly turned away towards the window. She could not stop the heat as it flooded her cheeks causing them to turn bright pink. Her heart started to beat frantically as she stared through the glass into the darkness. Julia felt herself wanting to turn and see what Kane was doing but proper etiquette had taught her to give the man his privacy. Of course, proper etiquette had also taught her not to be alone with a man unless he was her husband. Inappropriate behavior was no longer an issue now, after seeing her room destroyed this afternoon, it was clear that someone was after Julia and she was in danger.
Kane stood in front of Julia and then took her by the hand, pulling her to stand next to him. My God, this is it, he is going to kiss me, Julia thought to herself. She was surprised to see Kane still wore his shirt with only the top two buttons undone. The two of them were intimately close, with her face only inches from the small bit of smooth skin that his shirt revealed. Julia looked up at him and she could not stop herself from using her fingers to trace the hollow of his cheek. The dark handsome man had to use every ounce of control that he had to stay calm as her soft fingertips tenderly touched his face. It was like someone trying to maintain their composure while being struck by lightning. Kane resisted the urgent need to kiss her mouth because he knew he could never stop there. The cowboy reached behind her and pulled the single bunk bed down that was against the wall where she had been sitting. Julia quickly realized that putting the bunk down was the reason he had made her stand and she was mortified for touching him the way she did.
“You sleep in the bed and I will sleep on the bench,” Kane said, after taking a deep breath.
“That is very kind of you, thank you Mr. Kane,” she replied formally, determined not to let him see her embarrassment.
After escorting her to the restroom and back, the ranger waited outside their compartment to give Julia privacy to change into her sleeping clothes. When he heard what sounded like crying come from inside the room, Kane slid the door open and hurried inside. The ranger found Julia sitting on the floor with her trunk open and her face buried in her hands. She had not changed her dress yet and he could not figure out what the problem was.
“What’s wrong?” Kane worried.
“It is nothing,” she answered softly.
“Why are you crying then?”
“You will think I am foolish if I tell you,” she muttered.
“I will not, please tell me what is wrong?” He asked with more determination.
“I have no petticoats to wear under my dresses,” she admitted.
Kane smiled slightly at her dilemma and then realized it was his fault for packing her things in such a hurry. He had grabbed two dresses that hung in the wardrobe and then a few other things that were lying on the floor. Kane was actually glad he hadn’t taken a petticoat because he found them to be annoying and bulky. He still did understand why she was so upset over not having a petticoat. He had removed the layers of skirting from under her dress and Julia had gone all day without it.
“Miss Morgan, you have not had a petticoat for the entire afternoon, why are you concerned about it now?”
“Well, I was supposed to wear pantalettes under my petticoat but it was so hot, and I figured no one would ever notice so I…,” she paused with embarrassment.
“Well, what are you wearing under your dress now?” Kane questioned.
Julia stared up at him. “Nothing,” she said softly.
He hoped to God that she could not tell he was physically affected by her comment.
