This is a work of fiction. All characters, events, and places are of the author's imagination and not to be confused with fact. Any resemblance to living persons or events is merely coincidence.

She saw a group of men circling a lone figure and taunting him. There appeared to be a leader who stood watching the group surround the captive man. The leader yelled a few directions at the men and two moved to hold the captive on each of his biceps. The prisoner was tall, easily over six feet, and even though he was fully dressed, it was obvious to Kayla from where she was he was well built. She could also tell he was extremely handsome as well. He wore a hat, light blue shirt with a brown coat over it, and a pair of black pants. The shirt was wrinkled and creased and an arm of the coat was ripped at the shoulder. The way he looked indicated to Kayla that there had been some kind of physical altercation between the men before she’d gotten there. Despite his rumpled appearance the man seemed relaxed and not too concerned about the situation. He acted nonchalant, almost as if this kind of thing had happened to him before.

Everyone was totally engrossed in the captive and none of them even noticed Kayla who stood about forty feet away from them. She didn’t want to call attention to herself, so she stood listening to the conversation hoping she wouldn’t be noticed and too nervous to move.

“But I don’t have it,” the captive man said in a droll voice, while the others shouted various argumentative responses to him. They shook their heads obviously not believing what he told them. Some seemed ready to fight with him because of his response.

“Look, if I knew where it was I would tell you, I swear. I haven’t heard a word about it being anywhere near here. Believe me, if it was, it wouldn’t be a secret for long, you know that. Let me go and if I hear anything, I swear I’ll tell you.” He focused on the leader for a response.

“Regan, your word means absolutely nothing to me,” said the man who appeared to be the leader of the group. She noticed that the other men looked towards this one for direction. He was tall and thin wearing all black. His long black hair pulled back tightly in a ponytail.

At that moment, the man named Regan looked directly at Kayla. A slow smile appeared on his handsome face which immediately worried Kayla. As the smile on his face grew, a knot formed in Kayla’s stomach that tightened as she realized her going unnoticed just ended.

“Well then Edward, would you believe my wife if she told you I knew nothing about it?” Regan asked, challenging his captor.

“Regan, I never heard news of you getting married. I didn’t even know you were involved with a woman, much less married. I’ll tell you what…you introduce me to your wife and if she tells me you know nothing, I’ll let you go right now. Although I must admit, I doubt the woman even exists.” Edward smirked at the other men. “I’d love to take a look at the woman who would agree to marry the likes of Regan,” he said sarcastically.

“Well, my wife happens to be standing right over there,” Regan told him as he pointed directly at Kayla, “So feel free to take a good, long look.”
