This is a work of fiction. All characters, events, and places are of the author's imagination and not to be confused with fact. Any resemblance to living persons or events is merely coincidence.
Susannah tumbled forward and hit something hard that knocked her backward onto her butt. Her ankle was jarred viciously but that was easily forgotten as the bright light hung directly in front of her face, floating back and forth in the darkness. Suddenly a face appeared framed in the light. A garishly stark face dark-skinned and streaked with what looked like blood in weird patterns.
The light was lowered as whatever or whoever assessed her person. Susannah did the same, noting in horror the beast-like man was bare except for a strip of cloth around his lower waist and covering the front of his unmentionables. His body appeared oily and shiny illuminated in the light. The red patterns were painted down his torso and she smelled the strong metallic odor and knew it must be blood. Mixed with the heavy smothering stench of the oil lantern Susannah’s stomach heaved. Good God, she’d been taken prisoner by some savage caveman!
She crawled backwards on her palms towards the hole she’d been pulled through. But a hard hand clasped her ankle above her laced-up shoes and with a forceful yank pulled her back further into the cave. Susannah screamed as her ankle shot fiery darts of pain down her leg. Not only had she not made any progress to escape but the beast had dragged her further into his lair.
The hand on her ankle groped upward then ran down to her high-topped shoes. Susannah caught her breath. She could feel the callused hand against the hot swelling of her ankle. The touch lightened then grabbed the heel of her shoe and tugged. Susannah bit her lip to keep from making a sound but a moan escaped her lips as the tight lacing held the shoe in place.
A grunt came from her captor as he fumbled with the lace fastened in a bow. To her horror Susannah saw the beast reach for the strip of material around his waist. Had she escaped rape at Bunt’s hands only to be molested by this creature? The huge knife the savage withdrew from his waistcloth did nothing to calm her fears. He raised the blade above his head then sliced it down so fast it whistled through the air.
Susannah closed her eyes tight, knowing she was going to be murdered where she lay. But she felt only a cool rush of air on her ankle as the shoe fell off, the laces cleanly sliced through. Before she could comprehend what had happened, the man thing grasped her wrist and yanked her to her feet. She didn’t even have time to redistribute her weight off her injured ankle before he hoisted her like a sack of potatoes over his shoulder and started off into the darkness, one hand firmly on her rear, the other swinging the lantern and knife.
