This is a work of fiction. All characters, events, and places are of the author’s imagination and not to be confused with fact. Any resemblance to living persons or events is merely coincidence.
Sean followed Bridget with his eyes. She looked immensely better, better than when he had seen her when he asked if she’d like to join them for scones. It didn’t make any sense whatsoever. How could one woman seem to perk up so much in a matter of minutes? He rested his chin on his hand, and riveted his eyes on Bridget as she settled herself on the sofa next to Father Clancy.
“Ah, my dear girl, you look none the worse for wear. The rest you had has done you a world of good.” He smiled at her, and a bright flush crept into Bridget’s milky white complexion.
Sean remained silent. As far as he was concerned he had nothing to say to Bridget. Until Father Clancy left, he’d be sure to be on his best behavior. Bridget leaned forward, and began preparing herself a plate heaped with two scones, slathered with clotted cream and damson plum jam. Her appetite had returned in full force. He tapped his finger against the bristle on his cheek. He watched in rapt fascination as she took a large bite out of her scone. She chewed like a madwoman and swallowed with deep appreciation.
“After my long sleep, I feel much better. It was very rejuvenating.”
“Well, you certainly have a good appetite,” Father Clancy agreed, smiling in approval. “Would you like to ask us some questions about last night?” Father Clancy’s eyes glittered, almost as if he was hanging on Bridget’s every word. The old man knew something about Bridget, and he seemed absolutely delighted with the revelation. The inhabitants of his village always forgot one thing. He was an expert on human behavior. He had years of experience studying human nature…the best and worst. Whatever Father Clancy knew, it had to be big, and it was something that Sean needed to know.
Bridget’s eyes filled with wariness as she dove into the second scone. She swallowed and reached for her full cup of tea before speaking. After taking a sip, she breathed in deeply and sighed.
“Honestly, no. I’ve heard of things that go bump in the night before, and I’ve done quite a lot of research on vampires in relation to my romances.”
“I bet you have,” Sean muttered, without being able to help himself. Grimacing, he shut his mouth, and kept a watchful eye on Bridget’s reaction. She did nothing but narrow her eyes at him. If she wasn’t careful, she was going to give herself a rather good pair of crow’s feet.
“Well, then perhaps you know a good deal more about their nasty habits than even we do.” Father Clancy locked gazes with Sean.
“I doubt that,” Sean remarked.
Bridget coughed, and her face turned a bright red. Father Clancy’s brow furrowed, and he gave her a good thump on the back. “Better now, my dear?”
“Yes.” Her hoarse voice made Sean uneasy. She didn’t seem to be in any dire straits but he’d keep an eye on her anyway, in case she started to choke again.
“Father Clancy, I don’t think that my expertise in the area of vampires could even come close to the knowledge that this little village possesses. After all, do you not have a council formed for battling the creatures?” Sean sat up straighter. She shouldn’t have known that. This side of Bridget was really beginning to annoy him.
“Yes, of course we do.” Father Clancy didn’t seem the least bit perturbed. In fact, he acted as if her statement had been expected. How did she know about the council when it had been Claire that had rescued her from the vampires? Too many things didn’t add up.
“Well, then I’d expect that you all know how to hunt vampires. I have no idea what it takes to kill one; save for silver bullets, actually anything silver will do it, a nicely sharpened stake, or holy water.”
Sean began coughing. He hastily put his hand up to his mouth, as his eyes began watering. Bloody hell! What sort of a woman discussed killing vampires as easily as she would chat about tending to her flower garden?
“There are other ways my dear, ways that you no doubt know something about.”
Sean cringed. The topic of conversation was beginning to get to him. He didn’t really like to contemplate all the different ways that he could possibly meet his demise.
“The next time that Claire visits the village Father, you can ask her if there are some ways of vanquishing vampires that we know nothing about. Until then, I’d really appreciate it if we could end this discussion.
A small smile tugged at the corners of Bridget’s lips. Sean didn’t like the look of it one bit.
